Andre family papers

Scope and Contents The collection consists of letters, accounts books, and miscellaneous bills and receipts of the Andre and Hurlbert families. Most of the letters, written in 1874, are from Samuel to Elizabeth as he traveled through Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska as an itinerant farm worker. The bills and receipts are primarily from general stores, showing goods purchased, the prices paid, and eggs and dairy products accepted in trade. Bagg family papers

Scope and Contents The Bagg family papers contain a letter of welcome from residents of Savannah, Georgia, to George Washington, during his visit to Savannah in 1791. Also included are letters to Dr. Joseph Bagg and his wife, Eliza, of Detroit, Michigan. Two letters from Eliza's sister, Abby Billings, send family news and complain about housework (1843, 1844). George Dair diary

This collection contains a diary kept by George Dair, supervisor of Joyfield Township, Benzie County, Michigan. The diary deals with rural life in Benzie County. Early entries include information about Michigan weather, traveling routes, purchases of goods, and agricultural activities. The latter part of the diary includes entries of Joyfield Township records dealing with such matters as tax assessment rolls, the township voting count, and township finance.

George Farr autobiography

Scope and Contents This typed copy of George Farr's autobiography, entitled "My Own Life," tells of his childhood on a small farm in Erie County, New York, and his family's migration to Michigan in the 1850s. It describes farm life and work in rural Michigan in those years. The autobiography is primarily an account of the Civil War and of Farr's war experiences. Thomas Wright diary

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the diary of Thomas Wright (1831-1841) as it was published in the Tecumseh Herald in 1955, with a brief history of Tecumseh, Michigan. Wright's diary chronicles his relocation in 1831 from Massachusetts to Michigan, where he bought a farm. Earliest entries in the diary detail his journey across Lake Erie in a crowded boat that carried 250 passengers "of every age and condition".
